Suhaila

About Suhaila

The phenomenon that is Suhaila Salimpour has its roots in the cultures of her ancestors. Her mother, Jamila Salimpour, pioneered Middle Eastern dance in the United States. Her father, Ardeshir Salimpour, was a skilled Persian drummer.

This dynamic background set the stage for Suhaila's emergence as one of the world's most sought-after performers, teachers and choreographers of traditional Middle Eastern dance. Today, The Suhaila Salimpour School of Belly Dance creates instructional and performance videos for all dance levels, as well as fully-orchestrated Middle Eastern dance musicals and CD recordings of the latest percussion artists.

Schooled from an early age in jazz, tap and ballet, Suhaila began integrating her extensive classical training with the Middle Eastern dance passed on by her mother. The result was a true artistic breakthrough, as exciting as it was unique. Suhaila's performances expressed the emotions, soul and rhythms of ancient dance, influenced by the discipline and structure of modern forms.

As her reputation grew, Suhaila began teaching and performing her unique art throughout the U.S. and Europe. Her reception in the Middle East where she was frequently compared in the media to some of the greatest dancers in the Arab world-was nothing short of astonishing. She holds the distinction of being the first American belly dancer to be interviewed on Arab-American Television.

In the U.S., Suhaila appeared on television series such as Fame and Max Headroom and choreographed various music videos. For six years, she was the featured dancer at Byblos, a prestigious Arabic nightclub in Los Angeles, where she shared the stage with the most renowned singers of the Middle East. Miles Copeland, owner of IRS records, prominently featured Suhaila in his 2005 documentary, American Bellydancer. Comedian Margaret Cho is currently producing and directing a documentary about Suhaila, and producing Suhaila's one-woman show.

Suhaila's singular vision can be seen today in the Suhaila Salimpour School of Belly Dance, formed in 1996, for which she serves as artistic director. In 2000, Suhaila revived her mother's dance company, Bal Anat, the world's first tribal-style belly dance company. Suhaila is the artistic director and producer of Sheherezade, an acclaimed performing arts spectacle that mixes belly dance with the synchronization of Riverdance, the pounding rhythms of Stomp and the aerial artistry of Cirque du Soleil. For Sheherezade, Suhaila was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award ("Izzie")-making her the first performer in the belly dance genre to receive this prestigious nomination.

In addition to touring North America and Europe, Suhaila maintains her second-generation family business, the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, in Berkeley, California. Suhaila has developed and implemented the first-available certification program in Middle Eastern dance. The five-level curriculum can be purchased in print or on DVD. Most recently, Suhaila has released Bellydance Fitness Fusion, a series of DVDs that take the viewer through a journey of innovative exercise styles and beautiful performances by the Suhaila Dance Company. Suhaila looks forward to expanding the audience for and appreciation of traditional Middle Eastern dance in a distinctly contemporary style.

Schedule

Friday March 23, 2012
Suhaila Salimpour Format Drills That Kill 6:30pm-9:30pm

Looking for the “no frill” thrill of the drills and zills that kill? Well, this is the “no sit still” workshop for you! Great ready to dance and sweat . . . we know you wouldn’t want it any other way. You’ll walk away with some great technique and concepts to keep you busy for weeks and weeks.

Saturday March 24, 2012
Jamila Salimpour Format 9am-12pm

Jamila Salimpour is the mother of tribal belly dance. Her belly dance format has existed for over 50 years and still holds true as a valid and vibrant format. Suhaila will teach the basic movement families and concepts of Jamila’s format along with Jamila’s unparalleled method of teaching and playing finger cymbals. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll be floating your way through this workshop. Be ready for some challenging combinations that show you how dancing “old school” can be hotter than ever!

Folkloric Fusion Drills & Combinations 1pm-4pm

This super fun class is a combination of Suhaila format, Jamila format, folkloric steps and dance movement . . . all topped off with exciting finger cymbal combinations. This class gets you moving and out of your comfort zone to start integrating the movements in an organic way and to layer any finger cymbal pattern and hand movement on top of any dance combination. Great for all levels, beginner to advanced.

Sunday March 25, 2012
Layering Isolations & Drills 9am-12pm

Disconnect to reconnect. Learn to isolate your muscle groups so walking is independent of  hipwork and so hipwork is independent of upper body work.  Arm movements and cymbals can then be added seamlessly to any layering combination.  Once you train to isolate muscles (disconnect), you can begin to layer those movements (reconnect) for exciting results.  This workshop helps you learn how to remove limits from your dancing and realize your potential.

Sunday March 25, 2012
70s Style Choreography 1pm-4pm

No matter what stylization you like, you’re going to want to learn this 70’s style choreography by Suhaila. Using elements from both Jamila’s and Suhaila’s format, this choreography is an exciting exploration of pattern and musical interpretation. Be ready for muscle isolation, layering, timing variations, downbeat options . . . and those are just the starting concepts. Using her comprehensive and consistent format language, Suhaila clearly breaks down each move and choreography phrase into understandable pieces that layer and connect.

Each day will include a 1 hour lunch break

Why Take a Suhaila Workshop?

Because you owe yourself two things:
the opportunity to take with the best instructor available and the opportunity to train to be the best dancer you can be.

Why Suhaila?

Suhaila is a master instructor, choreographer and performer. She has extensive training in belly dance and classical dance as well as many aspects of the performing arts.

Suhaila is known for value-added classes and workshops. In every workshop, students are provided a positive learning environment in which they learn to safely train at a higher level than they ever have previously. The goal is to train safely and thoroughly, promoting technique and skill development. As students grow in their process, they learn how to bring emotional perspective to their work. They learn cultural contexts, creative tools, improvisational techniques, etc.

More reasons to attend a Suhaila workshop
  • to work and train hard
  • to “break out of the box” and grow as a dancer
  • to truly integrate dimensional aspects to your dance (grace, power, fluidity)
  • to learn timing, rhythms, and musicality
  • to have the ability to easily break down “any” style of belly dancing and perform it
  • to have a continual path for learning new things and developing your skills further
  • to train and learn in a safe, supportive and motivating environment
  • to truly realize your full potential as a dancer
